All right, first up we need to find out what causes hemorrhoids? The most obvious factor that causes hemorrhoids is constipation. In a nutshell, constipation forces you to strain and the act of straining increases the blood flow into the veins around the rectum which causes hemorrhoids, so that’s one of the major causes of hemorrhoids.
Another one is dehydration. basically, lack of fluids in the body causes dry, compact stools which are difficult to pass, which quickly causes constipation which in turn creates extra pressure on the rectum which causes inflammation of the anal veins which again causes hemorrhoids. Finally, chronic diarrhea is also a major cause of hemorrhoids. Chronic diarrhea in time will cause dehydration. The spastic motion of diarrhea also puts pressure on the rectum. This will cause straining. And of course, dehydration as previously noted can eventually cause dry, compact stools. It sounds like the opposite of diarrhea but the reality is that diarrhea causes dehydration and eventually, we will get inflammation of the anal veins that causes hemorrhoids.
Now, in that way, it’s clear that dehydration must play a big part in hemorrhoids. So another question is what causes dehydration and is there a way I can] prevent this from happening? First one is most people don’t drink enough water; it’s basic. Most people don’t drink enough water and in reality most people know that they don’t drink enough water. Instead of water, they try to replace it with coffee, tea and soft drinks, that sort of stuff.
Also exercising without taking on water, that is a cause of dehydration. Drinking caffeinated drinks such as coffee or green tea or colas or soft drinks, they use things that will cause dehydration. You may think, “Well, I’m taking on lots of fluids here,” but you’ll also notice that you urinate a lot more. And the fact is that if you’re urinating more than usual, you may be losing water. And things like caffeinated drinks like coffee, green tea, tea, cola, these contain caffeine which is actually a diuretic, which means you’re going to pass more fluids and you’ll in fact be dehydrating yourself. I know that doesn’t sound that logical, but that’s the way that caffeine works. Caffeine causes you to dehydrate.
Also, another big one is drinking alcohol. Drinking alcohol causes dehydration. It is not uncommon for someone to get their first cases of hemorrhoids after they’ve had a couple of really big nights on the beers or wines. There are clear links between drinking alcohol and hemorrhoids.
So the next question is how much water should I drink? Well, I mean there aren’t any hard and fast rules but a good rule of thumb to go by is to drink approximately two liters of water per day. For an easy way to kind of get that, when you wake up in the morning, have your first glass of water and then set your outlook task list to alert you every hour. Then just grab a glass of water, drink it down, and if you do that all through the day, you’ll have trouble NOT drinking two liters of water per day.
So it shouldn’t be hard. It certainly isn’t of benefit to just gulp down a liter in the morning and then gulp down a liter in the evening. you’ll receive far more benefit if you drink water regularly on an hourly basis.
So I guess the big question to answer is “Is there a link between dehydration and hemorrhoids?” Well, it certainly doesn’t help and drinking water will soften up the stool and make it easy to pass. Obviously, it will stop constipation, but it also has a host of other benefits. It can help with weight loss. It is absolutely necessary for the body to have water to help the clearing of toxins.
So, in conclusion, it’s clear you should be drinking more water, and dehydration is a major factor in getting hemorrhoids. And it’s not that hard to control hemorrhoids and certainly drinking water is one of the major first steps that everyone should take.
